Business On Board for arts organizations

Business On Board provides comprehensive leadership development and board placement focused on the unique needs of the Philadelphia region’s vibrant nonprofit arts + culture sector. Business On Board’s engaging, interactive sessions integrate lessons on the legal, ethical, and financial responsibilities of non-profit board members. Classroom instruction is enhanced by the unique learning experience of observing a board in action for the duration of the program.

Available to both new and existing board members.

CURRICULUM
DAY 1: January 25, 2019 | 9:00AM – 4:00PM
BOARD MEMBER BASICS: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ARTS + CULTURE SECTOR, BOARD MEMBER ROLES AND BOARD DYNAMICS.

DAY 2: March 15, 2019 | 9:00AM – 4:00PM
GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS: WHAT BOARD MEMBERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NONPROFIT FINANCE AND THEIR ROLES IN FUNDRAISING AND STEWARDSHIP.

DAY 3: April 12, 2019 | 9:00AM – 4:00PM
ELEVATING THE CONVERSATION: TOPICS INCLUDE STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP, EMPATHY AND THE GENERATIVE MODE OF GOVERNANCE.

DAY 4: May 3, 2019 | 9:00AM – 4:00PM
LEADERSHIP MOMENTS: THOUGHT LEADERSHIP AND PRACTICAL ADVICE ON HOW TO NAVIGATE AN EVOLVING NONPROFIT LANDSCAPE, IDENTIFY RESOURCES FOR BOARD EFFECTIVENESS AND DEFINE YOUR DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP STORY.

January to May 2019
BOARD OBSERVATION: EACH PROSPECTIVE NEW BOARD MEMBER IS THOUGHTFULLY MATCHED AS AN OBSERVER WITH THE BOARD OF A NONPROFIT ARTS ORGANIZATION. THIS ALLOWS PARTICIPANTS TO APPLY WHAT THEY LEARN IN THE CLASSROOM TO A REAL-LIFE SITUATION, AND TO ASSESS THE FIT BEFORE JOINING A BOARD. ABC STAFF WORKS WITH EACH BUSINESS ON BOARD GRADUATE TO SECURE A BOARD PLACEMENT—OFTEN, BUT NOT ALWAYS, WITH THE BOARD THEY’VE OBSERVED.
