Job Title: Associate General Secretary for International Programs

Location: National Office, Philadelphia, PA

Program Background: The International Programs unit is responsible for developing, managing and supporting the work of the AFSC in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Europe. Regional Directors oversee management of International Programs along geographic lines. The International Programs unit also includes the Quaker United Nations Office (QUNO) in New York – administered on behalf of the Friends World Committee for Consultation – and the Emergency and Materials Assistance Program (EMAP), a humanitarian assistance and rebuilding unit based in Philadelphia.

Summary of Responsibilities: The Associate General Secretary for International Programs is a critical senior manager within the AFSC. The position provides programmatic, administrative and financial supervision for activities of wide geographic range, complex scope and evolving nature. The AFSC’s International Programs comprise interlocked work in the general areas of peace; economic development and post-conflict rebuilding; economic justice; human rights, including gender rights, criminal rights and the rights of internally- and externally-displaced persons; post-conflict dispute resolution; etc. – responsibilities for which strong, creative, dynamic and thoughtful leadership is required. A staff of 175 foreign and Philadelphia-based employees conduct the international work under the Associate General Secretary’s direction. The Associate General Secretary is also a vital public face of the organization and a key factor in the success of international fund-raising.
