Next American City is seeking an Associate Editor who will bring exceptional copy-editing skills, an intuitive media savvy and administrative help to its fast-paced work environment. The ideal candidate will be a true go-getter who is looking to be fully involved in all aspects of running a non-profit media organization. S/he will have some reporting and editing experience, social media know-how, and experience managing others. Most importantly, candidates must have an aptitude and excitement for growing these aspects of his/her career.

Next American City is an award-winning urban policy media outlet (http:www.americancity.org). For the past nine years, it has published a quarterly magazine covering the topics of socially, economically and environmentally sustainable American cities. As the organization shifts all of its content online and broadens its scope to include international cities, it will publish a premium, subscriber-only product called Forefront. Knowledge of urban policy at the local or federal level is a plus.

The Associate Editor’s job will consist of the following:

– Copy-editing all Forefront stories;

– Overseeing all Editorial interns and their blogging or social media tasks;

– Overseeing the fact-checking process;

– Ensuring a robust social media following and high-level engagement with readers;

– Administrative help as needed;

– Blogging and writing as needed.

The job is located in Philadelphia; candidates from other cities will be considered provided the candidate is willing to move for the job. Starts January 2012. EOE.
