Assistant Instructor – Earn-A-Bike Coach
Neighborhood Bike Works (NBW) provides educational, recreational, and career-building opportunities to underserved youth through bicycling, and promotes cycling as a healthy, affordable, environment-friendly form of transportation. NBW offers after school and summer programming to youth, a space for adults to utilize our tools and equipment during Bike Church, our DIY bicycle workshop for adults, and Mel’s Community Bike Shop.

Position Summary: NBW has one available, temporary, part-time position for an Assistant Instructor – Ride Coach in our after school and summer programs. This individual will primarily be responsible for co-leading group rides and providing some mechanical support in our shop during our after-school Ride Club, Summer Camp, and weekend Drop-In and Monthly Ride programs. Ideally the candidate has experience and knowledge of riding a bike in Philadelphia and specific street laws pertaining to biking. NBW will train the candidate on our Ride Standards and policy when riding with youth ages 8-18. The candidate is expected to adhere to NBW’s safety standards when repairing and riding bicycles, and to promote safety with our youth.

Reports to: Program Director
Dates: Position starts May 12, 2017 through October 1, 2017 (Possibility of future employment pending funding)

Schedule and Hours:
May – June: 20 hours per week, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays (includes orientation and training)
 Office and administrative time are flexible, with weekly scheduled meetings
 Schedule with after-school Ride Club program is Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:00 – 6:30 PM
 Schedule with Drop-In programs is Saturdays, 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM
July – August: 26 hours per week, Tuesdays through Saturdays
 Schedule with Summer Camp program is Tuesdays through Fridays, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
 Schedule with Drop-In programs is Saturdays, 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM
September: 20 hours per week, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays
 Office and administrative time are flexible, with weekly scheduled meetings
 Schedule with after-school Ride Club program is Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:00 – 6:30 PM
 Schedule with Drop-In programs is Saturdays, 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM

Primary Responsibilities:
 Support the program staff with the day-to-day operations of programs including preparing for class each day and involving youth participants in activities, including set-up and break down, lesson co-facilitation and shop time.
 Assist with the hands-on portion of camp, offering assistance and guidance to youth while they work on their bikes
 Ensure the safety of all youth in the shop and ensuring that each bike is complete and safety checked before it leaves the shop
 Facilitate Drop-In (an open space for NBW youth graduates to come and repair their bicycles)
 Provide mechanical support as youth participants refurbish bicycles to earn
 Learn and adhere to NBW’s safety standards when repairing and riding bicycles to promote safety among our youth
 Mentor youth with a positive and supportive attitude, including holding youth accountable to NBW rules and policies
 Participate in administrative tasks and planning meetings as needed

Qualifications:
 Experience in bike riding in the city is required. Competent and experienced cyclist, familiar with safe urban traffic skills and navigation.
 Experience in bicycle mechanics is highly desired.
 The qualified person is upbeat, reliable, creative, a good team player, and likes working with diverse sets of youth in groups, and individually
 Experience in education or team building is highly desired. Ideally, candidates can demonstrate their ability to work with diverse groups of youth.
 Excellent communication and time management skills
 Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
 Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
 Positive representative of Neighborhood Bike Works to the greater community
 Successful passing of PA State Police Criminal Background Check, Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, and FBI Clearance required

Compensation: This is a Temporary Part-Time position that pays an hourly rate of $13.00 – $14.00 per hour depending on experience.
