Administrative Coordinator Intern, New Africa Center

The New Africa Center houses the the Muslim American Museum & Archive.

Our primary purpose is to preserve the African American Muslim rich cultural heritage and legacy to pass on to future generations.

The New Africa Center’s Administrative Coordinator Intern will assist in overall program planning and development, help facilitate the coordination of programs, and community organizing initiatives. The intern will cultivate relationships with community leaders, school district personnel, local politicians, and community-based organizations. The intern will provide support with planning and executing events and facilitating workshops for the community at large.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
 Support developing and organizing the Islamic Heritage Festival & Parade programs.
 Assist in event planning including outreach toward New Africa Center constituents and leaders.
 Assist in the organizing, tracking and updating of contact lists, databases and documentation.
 Provide general office support (filing, mailings, photocopies, etc.).
 Assist with research and special projects as assigned.
 Assist with event coordination, operations, and outreach and during events; coordinates support for event set up and monitoring.

Desired Qualifications:
• Are interested in gaining experience in community organizing, advocacy and campaign building;
• Willing to work flexible hours
• Desire to learn how to implement advocacy and organizing strategies.
• Interest in learning how community organizations and their networks work
• Exceptional oral communication skills (Fluent English required; Arabic a plus).
• Light typing/computer skills (MS Word, Excel)
• Experience organizing projects and demonstrated ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
• Ability to research and present information in an organized and concise format.
• Excellent planning, tracking, and record keeping skills.
• Ability to interact respectfully with diverse groups of people in a variety of settings
• Interest in African American struggle for social justice and working with community-based organizations in culturally diverse communities.
• Political Science, Public Policy, and other social science-related majors encouraged.
• Experience in community organizing, volunteer coordination, grassroots organizations, or lobbying preferred, but not required.
