American Association of Colleges and Universities Diversity and Learning Conference
October 19-21, 2006
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The diversity education reform movement is at a critical crossroads. It is time to take stock of where we are and, even more urgently, to chart new pathways for our work. How we define diversity programs?in language, in intellectual frameworks, in scope, and in the civic commitments to the larger world at the heart of our work?will determine the course and content of the next generation of reform.

We are in a period marked by contested cultural shifts within the nation and intensified conflicts throughout the world. It is imperative to candidly assess what is working, and what is not, in diversity education. Do the structures, programs, and conceptualizations that have been effective in the past still suit the present? What are the emerging new directions and challenges that lie ahead? What is the impact of the new emphasis on global learning, the heightened interest in civic engagement, and the demands on higher education to make excellence inclusive?

AAC&U?s sixth biennial Diversity and Learning conference will examine:

* consensus, contested, and evolving definitions of diversity;
* institutional change models that promote inclusive learning;
* new frontiers in diversity scholarship, programs, and curricular designs;
* points of tension that propel or hamper progress;
* research and assessment findings that can inform new models and approaches to diversity learning.

We encourage all of you to attend the conference this fall, join in the dialogue, and help chart new directions for this important work.
