2020 Virtual PCSS Conference: Expanding Citizen Voices – Oct 15,22,24

Posted by Pennsylvania Council for Social Studies on October 13, 2020

The 67th Annual Pennsylvania Council for the Social Studies is sponsored by FIREThe Foundation for Individual Rights in Education’s mission is to defend and sustain the individual rights of students and faculty members at America’s colleges and universities. These rights include freedom of speech, freedom of association, due process, legal equality, religious liberty, and sanctity of conscience — the essential qualities of liberty.

The PCSS 67th Annual Conference is virtual this year and we are excited to be presenting an October to remember, with two more Thursdays of evening sessions left before the conference culminates in a final Saturday event.   The first two Thursday programs are in the books (check out videos from sessions on the PCSS webpage at https://pcssonline.org/annual-pcss-conference-2020/ ).

Download the schedule for events on October 15, 22 and 24: https://pcssonline.org/67th-annual-pcss-conference/.

Register now and Zoom links will be sent to you prior to each remaining day of the conference: https://pcssonline.org/pcss-virtual-conference-registration/

Teachers may earn Act 48 credits for these session.

In 2020, we commemorate the expansion of voting rights in our nation’s history – the 150th anniversary of the 15th Amendment (prohibiting disenfranchisement based on race, creed, or previous servitude), the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment (women’s suffrage), and the 49th anniversary of the 26th Amendment (vote for 18 year olds). Each is more than a moment in history, but a chain of events to investigate and understand – protest movements, court cases, legislation, and more – that inform issues today. Preparing young citizens to learn how to exercise their voices in our democracy is a cornerstone of social studies education, whether that preparation takes place online during a pandemic or in a more traditional classroom setting.
