AARP Invites Applications for 2020 Purpose Prize Award

AARP, the nation’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Americans 50 and older to choose how they live as they age, is inviting applications for the AARP Purpose Prize.

The prize celebrates people age 50 and older who are using their creativity and the inspiration that life experience brings to make a difference.

Through the program, a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization founded by each of the five winners will receive $50,000 to broaden the scope of the organization’s work. Applications go through a formal, structured review process, including review by a jury of national leaders who have used their life experience to make a difference. Based on the jury’s recommendations, the CEO of AARP will select the final winners.

In addition, AARP will recognize other outstanding applicants by designating up to ten fellows, with a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) non-profit organization founded by each of the fellows receiving $5,000 each as well as access to a number of supports and resources.

To be eligible for a prize or fellowship, applicants must be a founder or co-founder of a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) organization in the U.S. that is using an innovative approach to address an existing or emerging problem; be at least 50 years old and started the work at age 40 or later; be able to clearly document the impact of the organization’s work; be a legal resident of the United States, or a U.S. citizen living abroad, or a resident of a U.S. territory; and not be involved in a project that is exclusively religious or sectarian. (People working in faith-based settings that have a broader social mission are eligible and encouraged to apply.)
